Built by GM, sold by Toyota in Japan. It failed. The build quality was bad(surprise!), the Toyota only features weren’t enough, and Japanese buyers didn’t fall for the gimmick. The next vehicle they worked with GM on was the Matrix/Vibe, which of course Toyota built and is still one of the most reliable “GM products” ever.

That and the engine was too big for Japan’s compact class, so it got hit with higher taxes. Which, incedentally, is one of the most reliable engines on the planet.

I was watching RCR’s review on this thing last night, the way he summed it up was dead on—Typical GM, one component is insanely over engineered, and many of the other components are improvised.

Describes my truck pretty much perfectly.

The biggest problem was body panel gaps and obvious lack of attention to detail. And you nailed GM perfectly. I think later I’m going to start a list of GMs that are legitimately 100% solid. #1 are the early to mid 2000s trucks and SUVs

Well good thing your not Zoidberg or I. Also, why would you ever want one unless it was to add to a museum of random Toyotas(which I'm totally thinking of doing)?

I’ve always heard Cavaliers described as such:

A Cavalier will run poorly for longer than many cars will run at all.

Even the original straight 6 in the Land Cruiser FJ40 is based off a GM engine.

I’m guessing that these were built at that Fremont California plant where they also made Corollas and Prizizizizizms, among other things. Wikipedia doesn’t mention the car, but what does it know?

Yeah no. Cavalier is one of their low points. Aside from their entire current lineup.

Reengineered Chevy 235 much like the earlier A-Type and B-Type which were closely based on the 1930s 207 Stovebolt.

These were built at the Lordstown, Ohio facility that’s why they are not mentioned in the NUMMI Fremont wiki page. Check the Chevy Cavalier wiki Page under the third generation (1995 to 2005)

There’s one on that Goo-net site with 30,000 miles or so for the equivalent of like $500.00.

I’ll write an article when I go to the Caribbean here in a few months but the amount of Corollas with Geo Prism front/rear ends and vice versa are incredible.

Toyota people get each other Doc. We get that we don’t want a Chevy(unless it’s the Chevy engine in my dads FJ40 were fitting to rip out for a 2UZ)
